o Google Looking to Boost Diversity Through New Howard University Program

Mountain View, Calif. -- Looking to bolster its recruitment of African-American software engineers, Mountain View-based Google said it has partnered with Howard University to launch a summer computer science residency called "Howard West." The three-month program, for rising juniors and seniors at Howard, will include a dedicated workspace at the company's Mountain View campus and a stipend to cover housing and other expenses in Silicon Valley. Howard President Wayne Frederick said the move will "[rally] the tech industry and other thought leaders around the importance of diversity in business and the communities they serve." The program expands on a longstanding partnership between the organizations, with the Google in Residence (GIR) program already embedding Google engineers as faculty at Howard and other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Google said it expects to include about 740 new students in the program within five years, with plans to eventually expand it to other HBCUs. "Howard West will continue Howard's tradition of providing unprecedented access to opportunity, only now with a presence in the heart of Silicon Valley," said Bonita Stewart, Google's vice president of global partnerships, and a Howard alumna.

o Sunnyvale Lowe's Store to Get Pilot of Augmented Reality Navigation App

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Lowe's shoppers in Sunnyvale will be among the first in the nation to get access to the home improvement chain's in-store navigation app, which it says is the first retail application of indoor mapping using augmented reality. As part of a pilot program beginning in April, customers in Sunnyvale and Lynwood, Wash. will be able to use Google Tango-enabled smartphones to search for products, add them to a shopping list and locate them within the store using augmented reality. The app uses motion tracking, area learning and depth perception to guide customers through the store using a mixed reality interface. Customer can create a list of their required items, then follow directional prompts overlaid onto the real-world setting to find each item using the most efficient route around the store.

o Survey: Most Americans Now on Social Media, Binge Watching Video

New York -- Eighty-four percent of Americans are now on social networks, and nearly half subscribe to at least one paid streaming video service, according to a new survey by Deloitte. In addition, nearly three quarters of U.S. consumers and nearly 90% of millennials and Gen Z have binge watched video content, with the latter two groups viewing an average of five hours of content in a single sitting. And nearly all millennials and Gen Z are multitasking while watching TV, averaging four additional activities, such as texting, browsing the web, using social networks, reading email and online shopping. "The shift to streaming, mobile, on-demand services and personalization are significant opportunities in 2017," said Kevin Westcott, vice chairman and U.S. media and entertainment leader of Deloitte. "Brands can bring new value, services and incredibly entertaining content to the empowered consumers across all age groups in a manner that can be monetized."
