o WSJ: Mountain View-Based Google Facing Record Antitrust Fine in Europe

Mountain View, Calif. -- Two years after being charged with antitrust violations in Europe, Mountain View-based Google now could be facing a record fine, The Wall Street Journal reported. Citing people familiar with the matter, the publication said that a forthcoming fine could total as much as 10% of the tech giant's annual revenue, which was just over $90 billion in 2016. That would shatter the previous record fine, about $1.2 billion against Santa Clara-based chipmaker Intel in 2009. The European Commission in 2015 charged Google with systematically favoring its own comparison shopping product over those of competitors in search results. The tactic allegedly meant that consumers weren't necessarily seeing the most relevant results in response to queries.

o Study: Fewer Employees Planning to Stay with Current Companies

Arlington, Va. -- Online about a third of employees plan to stay with their current companies for the foreseeable future, according to a new survey by CEB. Just under 33% said they expect to stay put, down 1% from last quarter. At the same time, their confidence in the broader business environment increased for the fourth straight quarter, suggesting that employees believe they can secure new jobs in the current labor market. Almost 40% of those who left their jobs in the first quarter cited a lack of future career opportunities as the top reason. In addition to career growth, employees also want recognition, which moved up two places to enter the top five drivers of attrition. "In today's tight labor market, employees believe that they have the upper hand when it comes to their employment," said Brian Kropp, HR practice leader at CEB. "That said, employees are finding it difficult to get promoted at their current employer. This is translating to employees quitting their jobs for opportunities at new companies rather than working harder at their current company."
