o Bowing to Investor Pressure, Travis Kalanick Resigns as Uber CEO

San Francisco -- Heeding the calls of disgruntled investors, Travis Kalanick late Tuesday resigned as the CEO of San Francisco-based ride-hailing service Uber. "I love Uber more than anything in the world and at this difficult moment in my personal life I have accepted the investors request to step aside so that Uber can go back to building rather than be distracted with another fight," Kalanick said in a statement. The move comes just a week after Kalanick said he would take an indefinite leave of absence following several months of heavy scrutiny about workplace culture at the company. That decision came after the release of an internal report authored by former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder recommending several changes amidst allegations of sexual harassment, discrimination and retaliation toward employees. Chief among those recommendations, which the company's board has pledged to adopt, was that "some of the responsibilities that Mr. Kalanick has historically possessed should be shared or given outright to other members of senior management." His decision to step back, however, wasn't enough for some investors. According to The New York Times, five of Uber's major investors -- including venture capital firm Benchmark --on Tuesday demanded in a letter that Kalanick step down immediately. Kalanick in 2009 co-founded Uber, which currently has approximately 14,000 employees and more than 1 million drivers.

o Report: Consumers Remain Unsatisfied by Cable TV as Cord-Cutting Grows

Yonkers, N.Y. -- As a growing number of U.S. consumers cut the cord on traditional cable TV service, those who remain subscribers are becoming more and more dissatisfied, according to Consumer Reports. The publication said that just two of the more than 30 providers in its latest ratings -- EPB Fiber, a municipal broadband service run as a public utility in Tennessee, and Google Fiber, a service offered by Google in a handful of markets -- received better than the lowest possible score for value. Meanwhile, some the country's largest operators, such as Comcast, Spectrum (Charter, Time Warner Cable), and Cox Communications Cable, earned low scores in multiple categories, including value and customer service. That let to nearly 800,000 Americans dropping their traditional pay TV package in the first three months of 2017, according to research firm MoffettNathanson. "Though consumer dissatisfaction with their cable companies has been simmering for quite some time, it's now starting to boil over in terms of actual cord-cutting from traditional pay TV providers," said Jim Willcox, senior electronics editor at Consumer Reports. "The good news is that there are now more alternatives, so it's possible for consumers to get the shows and movies they want, often at a lower price than a traditional pay TV plan." The publication pointed to several new online streaming services that are designed to replicate a traditional pay-TV package, including Direct TV Now, Hulu With Live TV, Sling TV, Sony PlayStation Vue and YouTube TV. Hulu With Live TV, for example, offers about 50 channels, including major networks in some areas and sports channels such as CBS Sports, ESPN and Fox Sports, for a starting price of $40 a month.
