o San Francisco-Based Samsara Raises $40 Million in Third Round of Funding

San Francisco -- Samsara, a San Francisco-based developer of Internet-connected sensor systems for industrial and transportation applications, said it has raised $40 million in its third round of funding, led by General Catalyst. Previous backer Andreessen Horowitz and Samsara's founders also took part in the round, which valued the company at more than $530 million. Samsara's hardware and software platform, targeting the $8 billion vehicle telematics market, combines data from sensors, GPS, cameras and mobile apps. The 100-employee company now has raised $80 million since its inception, with plans to double its headcount by the end of this year while investing heavily in research and development. "This new financing lets us invest in long-term technology development to explore new applications for our platform," said co-founder and CEO Sanjit Biswas. Biswas and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) John Bicket together previously founded and led Meraki, a cloud networking technology company acquired by Cisco Systems for $1.2 billion. Hemant Taneja, managing director at General Catalyst, has joined the company's board of directors.

o San Francisco-Based Elevate Security Launches After Raising $2 Million

San Francisco -- Elevate Security, the San Francisco-based developer of a web-based platform designed to shift human behavior and responses to security threats in an effort to prevent breaches, said it has officially launched operations after landing $2 million in seed funding. Costanoa Ventures and Webb Investment Network took part in the round. Led by former Salesforce cybersecurity veterans Masha Sedova and Robert Fly, Elevate focuses on improving people's responses to phishing scams and increasing reporting rates of suspicious activity. Emphasis is put on curbing risky behaviors such as password reuse, working on personal devices and refusal to use multi-factor authentication. "The approach the vast majority of companies use to train their employees on cybersecurity is so old-fashioned and out of date that it actually does more harm than good," said Fly, the company's CEO. "Force-feeding a 60-minute video with questions at the end isn't going to achieve much more than getting people to tune out the message. If employees don't feel invested in protecting digital assets, you might as well just leave the front door of your company open to hackers."

o Santa Clara-Based Intel Extends Cash Tender Officer for Mobileye

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Intel, the Santa Clara-based chipmaker, said on Thursday it has extended its cash tender offer for shares of Israel's Mobileye after falling well short of its original goal to acquire the bulk of the company's stock. The company's cash tender offer, at $63.54 a share, had been set to expired Wednesday night, but now has been extended through July 20. So far, just 50% of Mobileye's shares, have been validly tendered and not withdrawn, and an additional 8% have been tendered pursuant to guaranteed delivery procedures. Intel said it must be tendered at least 95% of Mobileye's outstanding shares to complete the $15.3 billion deal, first announced in March. Intel said the acquisition will bolster its position in the fast-growing market for autonomous vehicle systems, data and services, expected to grow to $70 billion by 2030.
