o San Francisco-Based Growth Street Partners Closes $70 Million Debut Fund

San Francisco -- Growth Street Partners, a San Francisco-based venture capital firm, said it has closed its $70 million debut fund, which plans to provide early growth capital to SaaS and technology-enabled services companies in underserved U.S. markets. Those target markets include Baltimore, Cincinnati, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Memphis, Omaha, Philadelphia, Portland and San Diego. Growth Street said it plans to invest $3-$10 million behind founders of companies with annual run-rate revenue of $1-$5 million. The firm said it will partner with entrepreneurs who previously lived the problem their business is now attempting to solve. "We think putting together entrepreneurs from industry with a combination of capital and help is a recipe for long-term success," said co-founder Nathan Grossman. Growth Street recently closed its first investment in Pear Deck, an Iowa-based developer of real-time K-12 classroom engagement tools.

o Serial Entrepreneurs Launch Palo Alto VC Firm Eleven Ventures

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Michael Howse and Greg Ballard, a pair of longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneurs who collectively have raised $300 million in funding for a range of startups, said they officially have launched Eleven Ventures, a venture capital firm focused on consumer and enabling technology startups. The firm, whose model is designed around deep integration with startup founding teams, said it plans to target sectors such as VR/AR, digital gaming and eSports. "We bring our own operating experience to the table with founding teams and contribute to their work as if we were one of them," said Ballard. Howse most recently served as the corporate vice president of new ventures at AMD, and previously was the CEO of Bigfoot Networks, which was acquired by Qualcomm. Ballard most recently was the senior vice president of social, mobile and emerging platforms at Time Warner, and previously was the president and CEO of Glu Mobile, and CEO of SONICblue, MyFamily.com (Ancestry.com) and 3dfx. Current portfolio companies include Lucid Performance, Cinova, Nitero, OutPost Games and Nimble Collective.

o Small Business Administration Launches New Online HUBZone Maps

Washington, DC -- In what it calls "the first step" in modernizing its federal contracting programs, the Small Business Administration (SBA) said it has launched new online maps of the nation's HUBZones, which give qualifying businesses preferential access to federal procurement opportunities. The site, designed in partnership with the White House's U.S. Digital Service, aims to help small businesses in urban and rural communities determine if they are eligible for participation in the program. SBA Administrator Linda McMahon said the project will "modernize SBA's contracting programs -- making them more user-friendly, agile and nimble for the busy entrepreneurs that we support."
