o Oakland Pandora Lands Investment from Sirius XM, Sells Ticketfly

Oakland -- In moves the company said will significantly strengthen its balance sheet, Oakland-based Pandora, provider of an Internet radio service, said on Friday it has landed a $480 million investment from satellite radio company SiriusXM, and announced its sale of Ticketfly to Eventbrite for $200 million. "This is a very significant juncture in Pandora's journey," said founder and CEO Tim Westergren, adding that the moves give his company "the flexibility we need to attack what is becoming a larger and larger opportunity as digital music enters a new golden age." The investment, in exchange for a 19% stake, comes after the companies reportedly had been in talks about an outright acquisition by Sirius XM. Sirius XM said the new deal will "allow Pandora to make targeted investments and capitalize on opportunities to build on its position in the streaming radio business." Pandora in May reached a deal to receive a $150 million investment from KKR, but announced on Thursday it had decided to put the deal on hold while it explored interest from another potential investor. The Ticketfly sale price includes $150 million in cash and a $50 million note payable to Pandora. In connection with the closing, expected to occur by the end of September, Pandora and Eventbrite expect to enter into a deal allowing Pandora to "substantially broaden the scale" of its ticketing opportunities.

o San Jose, San Francisco Rank as Nation's Top Two Tech Cities in New Report

San Francisco -- San Jose and San Francisco rank as the nation's top two tech markets, according to a new report by commercial real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield. The firm determined its top 25 tech cities by analyzing factors such as talent, capital and growth opportunity. Washington, DC; Boston and Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill, N.C. rounded out the top five, with Oakland/East Bay coming in at No. 13. Robert Sammons, the report's San Francisco-based co-author, said that while it was not surprising to see San Jose and San Francisco continue to dominate, mass-transit issues and escalating housing costs in those areas have fanned a tech spillover into secondary markets such as Austin (No. 7), Denver (No. 8), San Diego (No. 9) and Salt Lake City (No. 24). Complete details are at the links below.

o Report: DDoS Attack Frequency Increased 380% in First Quarter

San Francisco -- The frequency of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks spiked 380% during the first quarter, compared with the same period in 2016, according to a new report by San Francisco-based Nexusguard. All told, the company measured more than 16,600 attacks, including hours- and days-long attacks over Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year and other typically quiet periods. In addition, the company said it saw a 147% jump in HTTP Flood attacks, targeting the application layer and overtaking TCP, DNS and other popular volumetric attacks in popularity. Nexusguard said the increased adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT) has provided a wealth of new targets for hackers. "IoT botnets are only the beginning for this new reign of cyberattacks," said Juniman Kasman, the company's chief technology officer (CTO). "Hackers have the scale to conduct gigantic, continuous attacks. Plus, teams have to contend with attacks that use a combination of volumetric and application aspects." o Semiconductor Industry Posts Highest Sales Increase in Seven Years

Washington, DC -- In the market's largest year-to-year increase in seven years, global sales of semiconductors spikes nearly 21% in April to $31.3 billion, according to new figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). The figure also jumped more than 1% from just last month. "The global semiconductor market has grown at an impressive rate through the beginning of 2017," said John Neuffer, president and CEO of the SIA. "Although driven in part by tremendous growth in the memory market, sales of non-memory products also grew by double digits in April, and all major regional markets posted substantial year-to-year gains." Additionally, a forecast by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization now projects annual global market growth of 11.5% in 2017 and 2.7% in 2018, followed by a slight decrease in 2019.

o Study: Majority of People Can't Unplug While on Vacation

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Despite the benefits of digital detox, most people simply can't unplug while on vacation, according to a new study by McAfee. More than half of survey respondents said they can't last a full day without using their device for texting, spend at least one hour a day with Internet-connected devices while on vacation and even go on vacation with the intent to stay connected and not unplug. Still, while many individuals said they didn't intend to unplug while traveling, those that did (43%) reported a much more enjoyable experience (81%). For those who do plan to use their devices on vacation, McAfee offers several tips. The company says to avoid using public or unsecured Wi-Fi networks, keep mobile operating systems and applications updated, install device security tools and use apps that help find and lock devices in the event of a theft or loss.
