o San Francisco-Based Segment Raises $64 Million in Third Round of Funding

San Francisco -- Segment, the San Francisco-based developer of a customer data platform, said on Thursday it has raised $64 million in its third round of funding, co-led by the Y Combinator Continuity Fund and GV. Previous backers Accel, Thrive Capital, Ron Conway's SV Angel and New Enterprise Associates (NEA) also participated in this round, which increased the company's total funding to $109 million. Ali Rowghani, a partner at Y Combinator and former chief operating officer (COO) at Twitter, will join the company's board of directors. Segment said it will use the latest proceeds to bolster product development activities -- creating new products designed to make the data flowing through its platform more valuable -- and expand its staff. "This investment will help accelerate our core platform development as we centralize the data flowing through our platform and expose it in new structured ways," said CEO Peter Reinhardt. "We're just at the beginning of the enormous opportunity to help businesses all over the world use their customer data effectively to build better products and experiences." Segment's technology is designed to collect, unify and send customer data to more than 200 analytics and marketing tools automatically. Businesses also can combine their website and mobile data with data from additional customer touch points in cloud services like Stripe, Salesforce, Mailchimp and Zendesk. Clients include Intuit, Atlassian, Gap, Crate&Barrel, The Knot and New Relic.

o S.F.-Based E-Scape Bio Closes First Round of Funding at $63 Million

San Francisco -- E-Scape Bio, a San Francisco-based biopharmaceutical company developing therapies to treat neurodegenerative diseases, said it has raised $63 million in its first round of funding after closing a new tranche from Lilly Asia Ventures and Sutter Hill Ventures. OrbiMed originally led the round, which included participation from Novo Holding, Johnson & Johnson Innovation - JJDC, Novartis Venture Fund and Osage University Partners. E-Scape Bio is developing small-molecule drugs that target the inherited genetic drivers of neurodegenerative disorders and correct the dysfunctional proteins at the root of the disease. The company's lead program targets the Apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4) protein structure -- a major genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. "Our work demonstrates that ApoE4 structure is the key to unlocking small molecules capable of targeting the most prominent genetic risk factor for developing Alzheimer's disease," said co-founder Yadong Huang, a senior investigator at Gladstone Institutes.
