o San Francisco-Based Leap Motion Raises $50 Million in Third Round

San Francisco -- Leap Motion, a San Francisco-based developer of motion tracking technology for natural input in virtual and augmented reality, said on Monday it has raised $50 million in its third round of funding, led by J.P. Morgan Asset Management. Lawrence Unrein, the global head of J.P. Morgan Asset Management's Private Equity Group, has joined the company's board of directors. The company said it will use the proceeds to fuel global expansion, particularly in Asia, and advance innovation and adoption of its hand and finger tracking technology. "Natural input through full hand tracking is inseparable and fundamental to the future of VR/AR," said co-founder and CEO Michael Buckwald. "In much the same way as the touchscreen sparked the mobile revolution, Leap Motion is playing a transformative role in the development of human interface technology for VR/AR."

o Mountain View-Based Awake Security Launches After Raising $30 Million

Mountain View, Calif. -- Awake Security, a Mountain View-based security analytics startup, said on Monday it has launched operations after landing more than $30 million in funding from Greylock Partners and Bain Capital Ventures. Asheem Chandna, a partner at Greylock, and Enrique Salem, managing director at Bain, have joined its board of directors. Awake's platform uses machine learning and data science to automate the painstaking analysis performed by investigators, helping security teams detect, investigate and hunt for threats that currently are missed, such as corporate espionage, insider threats, lateral movement and data exfiltration. "We're taking a fundamentally different approach, automating the information gathering and interpretation that top experts perform, allowing any analyst to answer questions easily that are difficult or impossible to answer today," said co-founder and CEO Michael Callahan. "These advanced analytics free them from alert-focused drudgery and enable teams to do what they do best -- investigate and hunt for threats."

o Bay Area Ranks No. 2 Worldwide in Cities for Women Entrepreneurs

San Francisco -- The Bay Area, including the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas, ranks No. 2 on Dell's new list of the top 50 global cities for women entrepreneurs. New York tops the company's 2017 Women Entrepreneur Cities (WE Cities) Index, which ranks cities based on the impact of local policies, programs and characteristics, in addition to national laws and customs. London, Boston and Stockholm round out the top five, with Los Angeles No. No. 6) and Washington, DC (No. 7) also ranking among the top 10. Dell said the Bay Area comes in at No. 1 in terms of capital, as well as No. 2 in operating environment and markets. "Globally, women's entrepreneurship rates are growing more than 10% each year. In fact, women are as likely or more likely than men to start businesses in many markets," said Karen Quintos, Dell's executive vice president and chief customer officer. "However, financial, cultural and political barriers can limit the success of these businesses." The complete rankings are at the link below.

Palo Alto, Calif. -- When it comes to public Wi-Fi speeds, the U.S. lags far behind much of the world, according to a new report by Palo Alto-based Internet communications company Ooma. The company said the U.S. ranks No. 20, with average download speeds of 6.89 Mbps. Ooma also compiled lists of countries with the fastest and slowest Internet speeds (both private and public). The fastest include South Korea, Norway, Hong Kong, Sweden and Switzerland, while the slowest include Venezuela, Paraguay, Namibia, Bolivia and Nigeria. o Survey: 41% of Americans Say They've Been Harassed Online

Washington, DC -- Forty-one percent of Americans have personally experienced online harassment, while two-thirds (66%) have witnessed the online harassment of others, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center. Among those who have personally experienced harassment, 27% said they have been the target of offensive name calling, 22% purposeful efforts to embarrass them and 10% physical threats. Despite those numbers, however, Americans are divided on the issues that underlie online harassment, such as the appropriate balance between free speech and online safety. When asked how they would prioritize these interests, 45% said it is more important to let people speak their minds freely online, while a slightly larger share (53%) thinks it is more important for people to feel welcome and safe online. Similarly, 56% feel that many people take offensive content online too seriously, while 43% say this type of content is too often excused as not a big deal. "The issue of online harassment is more complicated than first meets the eye," said Maeve Duggan, author of the report and research associate at Pew Research Center. "Americans simultaneously want concrete solutions and safe spaces online, but they're protective of free expression. And given the spectrum of documented experiences with online harassment -- from the mild to the severe -- people sense there's no one-size-fits-all remedy." The survey included responses from 4,248 U.S. adults. The complete report is available at the link below.
