o San Francisco-Based Shift Raises $38 Million in Third Round

San Francisco -- Shift, the San Francisco-based developer of a mobile marketplace for buying and selling used vehicles, said on Wednesday it has landed $38 million in its third round of funding, led by BMW iVentures. New investors DCM Ventures and G2VP, as well as previous backers DFJ, Highland Capital and Goldman Sachs Investment Partners also participated. Christian Noske, a partner at BMW iVentures, has joined the company's board of directors. Shift, which currently operates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego, said it will use the funds to expand to new markets, bolster its technology and grow its staff. The company now has raised more than $110 million since its inception. Shift combines its online marketplace with a team of "concierges," offering free on-demand test drives, fully digital lending origination, on-site appraisals, trade-ins and car pick-ups to buyers and sellers. The company has created niche with millennials, who comprise more than half its customers.

o San Francisco-Based Particle Raises $20 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- Particle, the San Francisco-based developer of an Internet of Things device platform, said on Wednesday it has raised $20 million in its second round of funding, led by Spark Capital. Qualcomm Ventures and several previous investors also participated. Founded in 2012 by Zach Supalla and Zachary Crockett, Particle has developed an IoT platform that includes everything a company needs to connect its devices to the web, including Wi-Fi and cellular modules, IoT SIM cards and data plans, an IoT cloud and SDKs for building mobile and web applications. "While the media's IoT focus has been primarily on consumer electronics, wearables and `smart home,' we've learned from our customers that the future of IoT is within the enterprise market," said Supalla. Approximately half of the S&P 500 are currentloy using Particle's platform to develop IoT tools.

o Redwood City-Based Plexchat Raises $7 Million in Seed Funding

Redwood City, Calif. -- Plexchat, a Redwood City-based startup building a communication platform for mobile gamers, said on Wednesday it has raised $7 million in a new seed round of funding, led by Raine Ventures. First Round Capital, Dream Incubator, Lumia Capital, Macro Ventures, Singularity Ventures and Hany Nada (founding partner of GGVC) also participated in the round, which the company will use to market and build out its chat application for iOS and Android devices. "The lack of community is an existential crisis for mobile games," said CEO Shawn Foust. "This industry needs connective tissue, between games and between players, to thrive. Our job is to be the communication conduit that builds these bridges before the industry is hollowed out by performance marketing. Raine and our other investors clearly have the ability to help us do just that." Gordon Rubenstein, managing partner at Raine, will join the company's board of directors.

Facebook to Start Letting Media Outlets Charge Readers for Access to Stories

Menlo Park, Calif. -- You may soon need to pony up to read some news articles on Facebook, according to Business Insider. The site on Wednesday reported that the social media giant plans to launch a service letting media outlets charge readers for access to their stories. A person familiar with the matter told Business Insider that Facebook could start testing the service in October. "One of the things we heard in our initial meetings from many newspapers and digital publishers is that 'we want a subscription product -- we want to be able to see a paywall in Facebook,'" Campbell Brown, Facebook's head of news partnerships, told attendees of a conference in New York on Tuesday according to The Street. "And that is something we're doing now. We are launching a subscription product." Facebook is expected to allow readers to access 10 articles from a given publisher for free before having to pay an unspecified amount.
