o Palo Alto-Based Nauto Lands $159 Million for Autonomous Vehicle Technology

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Nauto, a Palo Alto-based developer of autonomous vehicle technology, said it has raised $159 million in its second round of funding, co-led by SoftBank Group and Greylock Partners. Previous backers BMW iVentures, General Motors Ventures, Toyota AI Ventures, Allianz Group, Playground Global and Draper Nexus also participated. Nauto is the developer of an automotive data platform, powered by artificial intelligence and an after-market dual-camera device, designed to add sophisticated safety and networking features to any vehicle or fleet. The system learns from other drivers, the road and conditions around vehicles in Nauto's network. The company said it will use the proceeds to fuel the growth of its retrofit safety and networking system into more vehicles, as well as support the expansion of its data platform in autonomous vehicle research and development across multiple automakers. "At a time when traffic fatalities are climbing and distracted driving causes more than half of all crashes, we're tackling that problem by putting Nauto's safety features into more commercial fleet vehicles," said founder and CEO Stefan Heck. "We'll now more rapidly be able to gather the billions more miles of real driving experience and data required to get a precise understanding of how the best drivers behave behind the wheel."

o Fremont-Based Concentrix to Acquire Australia's Tigerspike

Fremont, Calif. -- Concentrix, a Fremont-based provider of technology services to businesses, said on Thursday it will acquire Tigerspike, an Australian creator of digital products focused on strategy, experience design, development and systems integration. Financial terms of the deal, expected to close by the end of September, were not disclosed. Founded in 2003, Tigerspike blends technology with human expertise to deliver business outcomes, such as improvements in efficiency, productivity and employee engagement, Alex Burke, the company's CEO, will continue to lead the business in an unspecified senior role. "Tigerspike has established itself as a high-value enterprise player in digital products and strategy," said Chris Caldwell, the president of Concentrix. "This acquisition is intended to increase Tigerspike's speed to market of these solutions and provide us new opportunities for expansion." Tigerspike has operations in Australia, Singapore, UAE, Japan, USA, Poland, and the U.K. with about 300 employees, total.

Authorities Shut Down World's Largest Online Black Market

Washington, DC -- The Justice Department said on Thursday it has shut down what it called the "largest criminal marketplace on the Internet." The site, AlphaBay, operated for more than two years on the dark web, selling illegal drugs, stolen and fraudulent identification documents and access devices, counterfeit goods, malware and other computer hacking tools, firearms and toxic chemicals. As part of an effort led by the U.S., Thai authorities have arrested Alexandre Cazes for his role as the site's creator and administrator. Cazes apparently took his own life last week while in custody in Thailand. One AlphaBay staff member claimed that it served over 200,000 users and 40,000 vendors. Around the time of the takedown, there were over 250,000 listings for illegal drugs and toxic chemicals on the site, and more than 100,000 listings for other illegal items. By comparison, the Silk Road dark web marketplace, seized by law enforcement in 2013, had approximately 14,000 listings, and was considered the largest such site at the time. "This ranks as one of the most successful coordinated takedowns against cybercrime in recent years," said Rob Wainwright, the executive director of Europol. "Concerted action by law enforcement authorities… has delivered a massive blow to the underground criminal economy."

o Musk Says He's Gained Approval to Build Massive Hyperloop between DC-NY

Elon Musk, the South Africa-born business magnate behind companies such as Tesla, SpaceX and SolarCity, said on Twitter early Thursday that he's received "verbal approval" to build a massive high-speed transportation tunnel that he claims would take passengers from Washington, DC to New York in 29 minutes. Other stops on the proposed route would include Baltimore and Philadelphia. "Just received verbal govt approval for The Boring Company to build an underground NY-Phil-Balt-DC Hyperloop. NY-DC in 29 mins," Musk tweeted Thursday morning. "City center to city center in each case, with up to a dozen or more entry/exit elevators in each city." Musk did not specifically state which entity granted him the authority, or what kind of technology would power the system. CNBC pointed out that a current Amtrak train ride from Washington, DC to New York takes about 3 hours, 20 minutes, according to the company's website.
