o San Mateo-Based PerimeterX Raises $23 Million in Second Round

San Mateo, Calif. -- PerimeterX, a San Mateo-based developer of behavior-based threat protection technology for cloud, web and mobile environments, said on Tuesday it has raised $23 million in its second round of funding. Canaan Partners led the round, which also included participation from previous backers Vertex Ventures and Data Collective (DCVC). The company said it will sue the proceeds to expand in the U.S. and internationally, as well as broaden its platform into new areas. PerimeterX's web-based Bot Defender product utilizes artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify behaviors that are unlikely to represent human actions, such as landing a mouse directly on a button rather than scrolling towards it up or down the screen. It then block malicious bots in real-time. "Next-generation automated web attacks today threaten the integrity of the web by impersonating humans and abusing business logic rather than breaching systems, and they even harm the integrity of our political system by spreading fake news," said CEO Omri Iluz.

o Seagate Technology President Dave Mosely to Take Over as CEO

Cupertino, Calif. -- Seagate Technology, the Cupertino-based data storage giant, said on Tuesday that its board has approved Dave Mosley, the company's president and chief operating officer (COO), to take over as CEO when Steve Luczo steps down from the role in October. Luczo, who has served as CEO for 16 of the past 20 years, will become executive chairman. "Steve and the board have been actively working towards this transition for the last two years and we are confident that Dave Mosley is the right leader for the company's future success," said Mike Cannon, Seagate's lead independent director. Mosley joined Seagate in 1995, and is currently responsible for the company's global operations, sales and marketing, research and development, supply chain and procurement, logistics and IT.

o South San Francisco-Based Kezar Life Sciences Lands $50 Million

South San Francisco -- Kezar Life Sciences, a South San Francisco-based biopharmaceutical firm developing therapeutics targeting the immunoproteasome and the protein secretion pathway, said on Tuesday it has raised $50 million in its second round of funding. Cormorant Asset Management and Morningside Venture co-led the round, which also included participation from new investors Cowen Healthcare Investments, Pappas Ventures, Qiming Venture Partners and Bay City Capital, as well as previous backers EcoR1 Capital, Omega Funds and Aju IB Investment. The company now has raised $73 million since its inception in 2015. Kezar recently completed a Phase 1a clinical study of its lead drug candidate, KZR-616, a selective immunoproteasome inhibitor. The latest proceeds will help support upcoming clinical trials. "The strong demand for this financing reflects growing excitement for the potential of immunoproteasome inhibition in treating autoimmune disorders," said CEO John Fowler. Bihua Chen, the founder of Cormorant Asset Management, will join the company's board of directors.

o Agilent Acquires Patents from Population Genetics Technologies

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Agilent Technologies, the Santa Clara-based developer of laboratory technology, said it has acquired the molecular and sample barcoding patent portfolios of U,K.-based Population Genetics Technologies. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition includes patents related to both molecular and sample barcoding that improve accuracy and sensitivity of next generation sequencing detection, allowing customers to detect ultra-low mutation frequencies in very small DNA quantities. The technology is ideal for detecting rare variants in cancer and reproductive genetics, including liquid biopsies. "With the addition of this IP portfolio, we can now deliver complete target enrichment solutions to our customers that they can trust," said Herman Verrelst, the vice president and general manager of Agilent's genomics division.

o Survey: Political Climate Affecting Information Technology Hiring

Hanover, Md. -- The majority of U.S. information technology leaders say the nation's current political climate is affecting their hiring plans for 2017, according to a new survey by TEKsystems. All told, 71% of the more than 200 IT leaders interviewed believe their hiring strategy is being at least somewhat affected by possible changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), proposed restrictions to the H-1B visa program, Brexit and newly forged foreign trade agreements between Japan and the European Union. Of the 71%, however, more than a third (37%) said their full-time hiring has actually increased, while just 26% said it has decreased. This is despite the fact that just 42% of organizations said their budgets have gone up this year -- 7% fewer than those who had expected them to increase. "In the digital era, technology is ubiquitous, and most organizations will require consistent access to IT talent at every level of expertise in order to grow and innovate," said Matt Hannigan, TEKsystems' vice president of strategy and marketing. "Even if access to certain talent pipelines does tighten or close, the need for that talent will remain, and organizations will have to adjust in real time or risk derailing their technology initiatives." Programmers and developers remain the most difficult positions to fill, with architects moving up one spot to become the second most difficult.
