o San Francisco-Based Blackbird Air Lands $2.5 Million in Funding

San Francisco -- Blackbird Air, a San Francisco-based tech startup offering short-haul regional flights, said it has raised $2.5 million in a new round of funding from several individual and institutional investors, including Social Capital. Founded by Rudd Davis, the former president of USA Today's Travel Media Group who later helped build Hilton's content delivery systems, Blackbird uses proprietary data and technology to select routes, set schedules, sell individual seats and allow users to "air pool" to top destinations. The company's app is designed to match available aircraft with demand, digitally "crowdsourcing" flights and mapping potential routes. As a result of the optimization, seats to popular destinations start at $124.
