o San Francisco-Based Phil Raises $10 Million in New Funding

San Francisco -- Phil, the San Francisco-based developer of an end-to-end prescription management and delivery service connecting patients with local pharmacies, said on Wednesday it has landed $10 million in a new round of funding, led by Crosslink Capital. Eniac Ventures, Softtech VC, Forerunner Ventures, SV Angel, Silicon Valley Bank and Transmedia Capital also took part in the round, which the company will use to hasten its national expansion. Phil acts as a concierge service that automates communication between doctors, insurers, pharmacy staff and patients. Customers place orders through the company's website or mobile app, and prescriptions are delivered to their door at no extra cost. The company currently works with dozens of partners and more than 8,000 doctors nationwide. "With larger chain pharmacies, the consumer experience is often held captive by their business model that requires patients to return to the pharmacy, often multiple times a month," said founder and CEO Deepak Thomas. "We focus on providing a hands-off, concierge experience and rather than building our own pharmacy, we chose to partner with independently-owned pharmacies with strong community roots." Phil plans to partner with more than 200 independently-owned pharmacies over the next 12 months.

o S.F.-Based Uber Agrees to Settle FTC Charges Focused on Data Privacy

San Francisco -- Ride-hailing service Uber has agreed to settle charges from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that it deceived customers by failing to monitor employee access to their personal information or reasonably securing sensitive consumer data stored in the cloud. Under the deal, the San Francisco-based company will implement a comprehensive privacy program and obtain regular, independent audits. "Uber failed consumers in two key ways: First by misrepresenting the extent to which it monitored its employees' access to personal information about users and drivers, and second by misrepresenting that it took reasonable steps to secure that data," said Maureen Ohlhausen, acting chairman of the FTC. "This case shows that, even if you're a fast-growing company, you can't leave consumers behind: you must honor your privacy and security promises." According to the complaint, Uber in 2014 responded to a hacking incident by developing an automated system for monitoring employee access to consumers' personal information. The FTC, however, alleges the company stopped using it less than a year after it was put in place, and rarely monitored internal access to personal information about users and drivers for more than nine months afterwards.

o Palo Alto-Based LEAP Global Partners Invests in Two Companies

Palo Alto, Calif. -- LEAP Global Partners, a Palo Alto-based venture capital firm focused on cross-border investing, said it has made new investments in two Latino-founded companies -- Insikt, a fintech startup specializing in "lending as a service," and Wizeline, an AI driven talent and software as a service company. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed. Founded by Goldman Sachs alumni Roman Leal and Pablo Perez III, LEAP concentrates on investing in Latino-founded companies in Mexico and the U.S. The firm, which closed its initial fund just two weeks, recently also invested in PayStand and Listo Financial. The fund, LEAP Global Partners Fund I, plans to focus on seed and first-round investments. "In the last 10 years, the number of Latino students in computer science at major Universities has more than doubled," said Leal. "Add to that the emerging opportunities in Latin America, and we believe that we are at the beginning of an important secular growth trend of LatinX led companies."
