o Hayward-Based Ripcord Raises $25M in Equity, $15M in Debt Funding

Hayward, Calif. -- Ripcord, a Hayward-based developer of robotic devices that scan, index and categorize paper records, said on Thursday it has secured $25 million in its second round of funding, in addition to $15 million in debt funding. Icon Ventures led the round, which also included participation from Kleiner Perkins, Lux Capital and Silicon Valley Bank. The company said it will use the proceeds to develop new robots to meet increasing demand for records digitization, build out its software for records management enterprise integration, hire over 100 new employees over the next year and expand into new markets. Co-founded by former Apple and NASA employees, Ripcord enables companies to digitize paper records and connect those records to existing enterprise systems. "Since Ripcord launched in March, we've been flooded with requests from some of the largest global companies," said CEO Alex Fielding. "To keep up with demand, our investors doubled down." Jeb Miller, a general partner at Icon Ventures, has joined the company's board of directors.

o Mountain View-Based ZingBox Raises $22 Million in Second Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- ZingBox, a Mountain View-based developer of Internet of Things (IoT) security software, said on Thursday it has raised $22 million in its second round of funding, co-led by Dell Technologies Capital and Triventures. The company said it will use the additional capital to increase headcount over the next year, as well as expand its market reach. ZingBox's Guardian software uses machine learning to establish baseline normal behavior, detect anomalous activities and provide real-time remediation across an organization's entire IoT footprint. The idea is to analyze communication to and from each device, watching for deviations in behavior and providing alerts for suspicious activity.

o Earth Networks to Spin Out Oakland-Based Whisker Labs

Oakland -- Earth Networks, the Maryland-based operator of a large weather sensor network, said on Thursday it will spin off its Oakland-based Whisker Labs unit, with founder and CEO Bob Marshall becoming the new CEO of Whisker. Rich Spaulding, most recently the president and chief operating officer (COO) of Earth Networks, has become the company's new CEO. Whisker is the developer of a sensing and software platform that taps the electrical network of a home to connect all of its appliances, including unconnected ones like HVAC and water heaters. The platform is designed to monitor home and appliance efficiency, alerting homeowners to energy waste and impending appliance failure. Earth Networks made the company a standalone unit in December. "Ninety-nine percent of appliances in the home are not connected, which means that homeowners exist in an information vacuum," said Marshall. "As an independent company, Whisker Labs will be more strongly positioned to bring to market innovative data, analysis and automation services." The move comes nine months after Earth Networks sold its consumer-focused WeatherBug brand to New York-based xAd.

Unity also has named Graham Cooper to its board of directors. Cooper previously served as the chief financial officer (CFO) of Receptos, acquired by Celgene in 2015.
