o Palo Alto-Based ThoughtSpot Lands $60 Million in New Funding

Palo Alto, Calif. -- ThoughtSpot, the Palo Alto-based developer of an AI-driven analytics platform, said it has raised $60 million in a new round of funding, led by previous backer LightSpeed Ventures. All previous investors, as well as new investor Capital One Growth Ventures, took part in the round, which comes just months after the company landed $60 million in its third round last summer. ThoughtSpot, which now has raised more than $160 million since its inception, said it will use the proceeds to accelerate research and development for its core platform, as well as expand into the Asia Pacific region and hire employees to nurture and grow key accounts. The company's technology lets users quickly analyze company data, while helping business intelligence and analytics teams cut their reporting backlogs. Customers include Amway, Bed Bath and Beyond, Capital One, Celebrity Cruises, Chevron Federal Credit Union, DeBeers and Scotiabank.

o Rate of Information Technology Job Growth Remains Sluggish in July

Alexandria, Va. -- The rate of IT job growth in the U.S. remained sluggish in July, according to new figures from the TechServe Alliance. The trade association said that the number of IT jobs increased just 0.1% for the month to just over 5.2 million, and is up 2.9% since the same point in 2016. Engineering employment also increased by 0.1% to nearly 2.6 million. "While it still represents an increase in IT employment, the rate of growth has generally been on a downward trajectory for the past year," said CEO Mark Roberts. "Given the extremely low unemployment rates in many high-demand IT and engineering skill sets, the shortage of supply is clearly impeding the growth rate of the U.S. technical workforce."

o Growing Number of IT Executives Expect Strong Finish to 2017

Downers Grove, Ill. -- A growing number of IT executives are expressing confidence that business will be strong for the remainder of 2017, according to a new survey by CompTIA. The organization's IT Industry Business Confidence Index increased 3.2 points to 67.4 (out of 100), marking the first time in the survey's nine-year history that the figure improved from the second to the third quarter. "More than three-quarters of the firms surveyed say they are on target or ahead of revenue goals for 2017, which certainly figures into the positive business sentiment," said Tim Herbert, CompTIA's senior vice president of research and market intelligence. All three components of the index showed positive movement in Q3. Executives' confidence in the U.S. economy rose to 62.4 (from 60), confidence in the IT industry rose to 70.6 (from 66.7), and self-assessment of their own company increased to 69.1 (from 65.9). Tempering the positive results are concerns that customers will tighten their purse strings and delay or postpone new spending on technology products and services. "This is especially concerning for small tech firms who often have a concentrated customer base and can be significantly impacted by the loss of just a few accounts," said Herbert. A total of 314 IT companies took part in the survey, which is available through the link below.
