o San Francisco-Based Ironclad Raises $8 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Ironclad, a San Francisco-based developer of software designed to automate contracting processes, said on Wednesday it has raised $8 million in its first round of funding, led by Accel. The company, which now has raised more than $11 million since its inception two years ago, is the creator of a platform
designed to turn contracts into code, automating workflows and approvals while freeing up legal teams. It also identifies key terms and entities, allowing users to search, tag and manage their contracts as they would other pieces of business data. Current customers include GoFundMe, Gusto and HotelTonight. "We're focused on turning every contract into an intelligence asset," said CEO Jason Boehmig. "Contracts are a business's DNA: the blueprint for sales, marketing, IP. Until now, no one has been able to sequence the DNA, to map the genome and control the blueprints." Boehmig conceived of the idea as a corporate attorney at Fenwick & West. Together with co-founder and CTO Cai GoGwilt, a former Palantir Technologies software engineer, the two built a prototype of the platform while at Y Combinator. Accel's Steve Loughlin has joined the company's board of directors.

o San Jose-Based Pixelworks Completes Deal for ViXS Systems

San Jose, Calif. -- Pixelworks, a San Jose-based developer of visual display processing tools, said on Wednesday it has completed its $17.7 million acquisition of Toronto-based ViXS Systems, a developer of media processing, encoding and transcoding products. The all-stock deal was first announced in May. Pixelworks said the acquisition adds more than 470 issued and pending worldwide patents to its portfolio, while broadening its product offerings and diversifying its revenue across end markets. Todd DeBonis, the president and CEO of Pixelworks, said in May that the move "represents a unique opportunity to strengthen our position as a known technology leader with extensive visual and video processing expertise." It also is expected to help the company accelerate its development of end-to-end video streaming systems.

o San Francisco-Based Drive Motors Raises $5.2 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Drive Motors, a San Francisco-based developer of e-commerce tools for car dealerships, said on Wednesday it has landed $5.2 million in a new round of seed funding, led by Bullpen Capital. Previous backers Y Combinator, Khosla Ventures, Perkins Coie and Emagen Entertainment Group also participated. The company, which graduated from Y Combinator's incubator program last year, adds online checkout capabilities to car dealership websites and showrooms, and has surpassed 1,000 car orders a month. "Ecommerce is rapidly becoming essential to top-grossing car dealerships, and this funding will allow Drive Motors to offer dealers of all sizes a full-stack solution that streamlines marketing, financing, contracting, servicing and more," said founder and CEO Aaron Krane. Duncan Davidson, a general partner of Bullpen Capital, has joined the company's board of directors.

ACLU Sues Maryland Governor Over Facebook Censorship

Baltimore -- The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Maryland on Tuesday filed suit against Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, alleging that critical comments posted to the Republican's official Facebook page have been deleted and their authors blocked from the site. The suit, filed in federal district court on behalf of four individuals, claims the censorship violates the First Amendment, as well as Maryland's own social media guidelines for government officials. "The highest purpose of the First Amendment is to protect the right of Americans to engage in political speech and to petition the government to address their concerns," said Deborah Jeon, legal director for the ACLU of Maryland. "As the Supreme Court ruled in June, and a federal judge in Virginia echoed just last week, social media has become a vital means for constituents to communicate with their elected officials." The plaintiffs, who did not know each other prior to the suit, said they had posted on a variety of issues, from trying to draw Hogan's attention to the Syrian refugee crisis to asking him to take a public position on the Trump administration's Muslim ban. The suit is seeking a permanent injunction against Hogan's social media policy.
