o FTC Launches Initiative to Help Curb Problem of Unwanted Robocalls

Washington, DC -- With the number of illegal robocalls continuing to escalate, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it has launched a new initiative aimed at curbing that trend. Under the program, when consumers report Do Not Call or robocall violations, the agency each day will release those phone numbers to telecommunications carriers and other industry partners implementing call-blocking technology. Other information, such as dates and times of unwanted calls, the general subject matter of the call and whether the call was an automated robocall, also will be made available. The data is key, since the majority of call-blocking technology relies on databases of telephone numbers that have received significant consumer complaints. The FTC said it received more than 1.9 million robocall complaints during the first five months of this year
