o Autodesk Acquires Swedish Game Software Maker Bitsquid

San Francisco -- Autodesk, a San Francisco-based provider of design software, announced on Monday that it has acquired Bitsquid, a Sweden-based provider of 3D game development software. The acquired company was founded in 2009 by the owners of Fatshark and the former lead engineers of Grin and is focused on flexible design tools. Its technology will be incorporated by Autodesk into own products for customers outside of the games industry, including architecture, manufacturing, construction, and film, according to the announcement. Autodesk said it plans "to create new types of design exploration tools that allow visualization and contextualization of designs using the same fluid control and immediate feedback that exist today in modern console and PC games."

o Shares in Apple Steady on First Day of 7-for-1 Split

Cupertino, Calif.-- Shares in Apple closed relatively unchanged on Monday, after the company executed a 7-for-1 split of its stock, closing at $93.62, or down 0.09% for the day. In a purported effort to make the share price "more accessible to a larger number of investors," according to a recent public statement by Apple CEO Tim Cook, the company's share price is now less than $100, as compared to around $700 previous to the split. Two years ago, Cook said during the company's annual shareholder meeting that he did not see any point of a stock split since it did "nothing" for shareholders.

MIS' software provides an enhanced view of geospatial, productivity, workforce and cost data to support better operational and strategic decision making. Financial terms were not disclosed. o SpaceX, Palantir Ruffling Feathers in DC With Gov Contracting Push

Washington, DC -- Politico reports on Monday that two high-profile Bay Area companies -- SpaceX, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, and software firm Palantir -- have ruffled feathers as they've entered the defense procurement market. "They've made enemies of big-name defense contractors. They've locked horns with their government customers. And they've refused to play by the unwritten rules of federal contracting," wrote Politico. The article says that SpaceX has filed suit against the Air Force to reopen a satellite launch contract, a move that Politico says violates an "unwritten rule" of government contracting of trying to avoid suing the customer. "Their battles have put on display a striking culture clash: the Silicon Valley startup mentality, in which disruptive technologies quickly win consumers, versus Washington's inside game, mastered by long-established companies with deep government connections and knowledge," wrote Politico. Both companies have recently turned to Congressional supporters to help them with their procurement battles.

o San Francisco-based Uber Raises $1.2 Billion at $17 Billion Valuation

San Francisco -- Following weeks of competitive bidding between investors vying for a piece of the red-hot startup, San Francisco-based on-demand car service Uber said on Thursday it has raised $1.2 billion in funding at a pre-money valuation of $17 billion. Fidelity Investments led the round, which according to Bloomberg also included participation from Wellington Management, Summit Partners, BlackRock, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and previous backers Google Ventures and Menlo Ventures. The funding, which comes nearly four years after the company originally launched operations, is expected to total $1.4 billion, once Uber completes its second close in the coming days. The company, which lets clients request and pay for car service through their mobile devices, now operates in 128 cities located in 37 countries. "With our growth and expansion, the company has evolved from being a scrappy Silicon Valley tech startup to being a way of life for millions of people in cities around the world," wrote CEO Travis Kalanick in a blog post. "This `Uber' way of life is really a reflection of our mission to turn ground transportation into a seamless service and to enable a transportation alternative in cities that makes car ownership a thing of the past."

o Los Altos-Based Elasticsearch Raises $70 Million in Third Round

Los Altos, Calif. -- Elasticsearch, the Los Altos- and Netherlands-based developer of a real-time search and analytics platform, said on Thursday it has raised $70 million in its third round of funding, led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Benchmark Capital and Index Ventures also took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $104 million over the past year and a half. It plans to use the latest funds to bolster marketing and product development activities, and expand its sales organization. The company claims more than 8 million downloads of its core products -- Elasticsearch, Logstash and Kibana -- counting Comcast, eBay, Facebook, Mayo Clinic, TomTom and Tinder among its clients. Harry Weller, a general partner at NEA, will join the company's board of directors. "It's rare to see a company not only get developers excited by their technology, but also sell successfully into the enterprise, and we see massive opportunities on an even broader scale," said Weller.

o San Francisco-Based Twitter to Acquire Namo Media

San Francisco -- Twitter said it will acquire San Francisco-based startup Namo Media, a creator of tools designed to let developers ad native ads to mobile apps. TechCrunch pegged the value of the deal at around $50 million. The company said the deal builds on last October's acquisition of MoPub. "We believe strongly that all app developers large and small should be able to monetize their applications without sacrificing the user experience," wrote Kevin Weil, Twitter's vice president of product, in a blog post. "In our conversations with the Namo Media team, it became clear we share a vision for how native advertising can improve the state of mobile app monetization for marketers, app publishers and users." Namo counts Google Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, Betaworks, Trinity Ventures and Susa Ventures among its investors.

o Steve Case's Revolution Growth Invests $30M in Oakland-Based Revolution Foods

Oakland -- Revolution Growth, the investment firm co-founded by Steve Case, Ted Leonsis and Donn Davis, said on Wednesday it has invested in Oakland-based Revolution Foods, developer of a school meal service and ready-to-eat meal kits. The New York Times pegs the investment at $30 million, citing people familiar with the matter. Case, the co-founder of AOL, will join the company's board. Founded by Kristin Groos Richmond and Kirsten Saenz Tobey, two moms with backgrounds in education, Revolution Foods prepares and delivers more than 1 million fresh meals each week to approximately 1,000 schools nationwide, most in underserved communities. The company last year also launched healthy meal kits in grocery stores. "There are many facets to addressing the healthcare challenges we face in our country -- and one of them is access to healthier food options at home, at work, on the road, and especially in our schools," said Case. Washington, DC-based Revolution's prior investments mostly include companies with ties to tech, including Zipcar, LivingSocial, AddThis, Lolly Wolly Doodle, Bigcommerce and Echo360.

o Survey Identifies Top Priorities, Challenges for Government IT Officials

Washington, DC -- The top three priorities for federal information technology officials are IT security, modernization and mobility, according to a new survey from TechAmerica, the government and public policy division of CompTIA. The 24th Annual Federal CIO Survey, which the organization completed in collaboration with Grant Thornton, also found several challenges for IT officials, including workforce, security and budget cost savings. "Our latest report highlights how federal officials are adopting new technologies to empower their workforces, but in the face of enormous headwinds," said Srikant Sastry, managing principal of Grant Thornton's Global Public Sector. "Despite obstacles like sequestration and shutdown, as well as an ever evolving security threat, CIOs and CISOs are driving innovation in the cloud and mobile devices, in developing collaboration environments, and in security."
